Academy A6M5c Zero progress update 1 29/03/2026

Started working on:

- Academy 1/72 Mitsubishi A6M5c Zero -

radial engine components.

I just started working on my next project, the Mitsubishi A6M5c Zero Type 52c from Academy. I separated thee radial engine components from the sprues, They need a bit of work before priming and painting.

odd shape.

After a quick dry-fit test, I noticed that the plate on which the backrow pistons sit on has an odd shape. This will need addressing as it might cause fitment issues.

bottom wing half off the sprue.

The bottom wing half looks really nice and will look even nicer after I clean up the sprue nubs.

some components ready for sanding

There's quite a bit of sanding to be done. for the most part everything seems to fall in place nicely so far. But there are areas that need a little bit of attention.

dry-fitting the wings and fuselage, top view.

After a bit of preliminary sanding, I dry-fitted the wings and fuselage. From the top it doesn't look half bad to be honest. But some filling may be required along the wing roots, I feel like the gaps are a bit to large.

On the underside however, the story changes a bit. There is a pretty sizeable gap where the wing meets the fuselage which will definitely need filling. It is possible to slide it over so that it stays flush, but then the leading edges will be misaligned which is not ideal.😞

Anyway that is about it for the time being. I'll now get back to some more sanding and dry-fitting before spraying on some primer and putting down the first colors. I'll keep you posted on the progress of this build so keep an eye out for future updates.

For now, I hope you have a wonderful day, and happy modeling everyone. Cheers! 😁
